Do you make these 3 mistakes in your cleaning business?

I need to be really honest with you about your cleaning business.  I can, and will, teach you ways to build a successful cleaning business that will smash your competition.  But, right now, I believe the best advice I can give you is to be real with you.

Now don’t worry!  I’m not going to be like your negative relatives and friends.  In fact I’m probably going to be the most positive influence you will ever have for starting a cleaning business, but if you overlook these things then it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be wishing you never started the business in the first place.

Before I get into it, do you realise how many people start cleaning businesses?  And the worst part is that most of them actually manage to get a few clients!  Why is this so bad?  Simple, because those few clients that they have end up being the only reason why they don’t give up, and yet years go by and they never create a decent income, let alone put on staff and build it into a successful business.

We all know that most businesses fail, but I have spoken to hundreds of cleaning business owners and if I took 100 of them there would only be 1 or 2 that are actually happy with there business!  Did you hear that?  Only 1 to 2 out of 100!!!  The rest are simply hoping that something is going to change, and I tell them NO.  Nothing will change until you change, and that means taking the secrets of a successful cleaning business and applying them to yours.

Advertising Doesn't Work
The first mistake I see people make is they spend money on advertising.  Yes, it is a mistake.  Why?  Because advertising your cleaning business does not work.  Let’s go through an example.

Jessica runs an ad in the local paper and pays $200 for the ad.  She gets a couple of calls, so goes off and does a quote for the jobs.  One of the quotes goes ahead and Jessica is in business!  The client asks for a fortnightly clean at $70.  Now think about this, Jessica has just spent $200 to get a client, but it’s going to take her over six weeks just to make her money back from her advertising.  Now what if Jessica has someone else doing the cleaning, she pays them $40 out of the $70 for the cleaner to do the job.  Jessica now makes $30 profit per fortnight for that clean, which means she will take over 3 months to make her money back from the advertising.

How is it profitable to run your business with staff like this?

Most people who start a cleaning business get there first few clients through word of mouth.  They tell all of there friends and family that they’re starting a cleaning business, word gets out, and a few people call and use the service.  Once this avenue is used up people are stuck with a couple of friends as clients, but can’t build it into a great business.

Now just so I don’t leave you in despair, there are ways you can go out and pour clients into your cleaning business without spending a single dollar!  Would you be interested in learning how this is possible?  And yes, that means profit from day 1, and you can have as many customers as you can handle, which leads me to my next point.

I Hate My Staff
Staff.  Staffing is the second deadly mistake in a cleaning business.  This is a huge topic in itself, but to make this one short, most cleaning businesses do not manage this area of the business very well at all.  Now I understand that you’re going to need staff if you build your business larger than yourself, so I’m definitely not against having people do the cleaning for you, but you must understand that staff can also be your biggest problem.

Did you know the average time that a staff member stays with a cleaning business is between 3-5 months.  This might not sound so bad until you realise that the number one reason clients will leave you is because of high staff turnover!  That’s right, clients would rather have the same cleaner doing an average job than a new cleaner every 3 months doing an excellent job!  I know, it sounds crazy, but I’ve dealt with hundreds of cleaning businesses throughout the USA, UK, Canada and Australia and most of them with staff have this same problem.

This one is a little hard to solve without going into great detail, but if I can sum up the answer in a couple of words, they would be Training and Outsourcing.  These two ideas alone have not only saved many cleaning businesses, but have enabled them to double, even triple there profits within 6-12 months of implementing them.  These lessons taught in detail take far too long to fit into this short time space, but I will show you later how you can access all this information.

The Master Key
The third one I want to give you is this.  Albert Einstein once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.  The amount of cleaning business owners I have met that are having problems in there cleaning business, and they ask me “Jonathan, this part of my business just doesn’t work”.  Then I ask them “what have you done different to change it”, and they look at me and say “nothing, we don’t know what to do”.

Now I’m not so harsh to say that these people are insane as we all do this in our businesses every day.  We know things could be better, but we never go to work on our business, improving the way it runs, improving our marketing strategies, it’s just something we don’t focus on.  But I’m here to suggest that this IS the number 1 reason why cleaning businesses all over the world continue to fail every day.

There is not a single cleaning business that I have come across that runs everything perfectly!  Even the successful ones still have so much room for improvement.

The hard part with this mistake is that sometimes you honestly don’t know what to do.  Some people ask friends for advice, some people try and find free advice from the internet, but the problem is that most people who offer advice have either never owned a successful cleaning business, or they’re part of the 98% of people I talked about that may ‘own’ a cleaning business, but they have no idea what they are doing.
